Bursting Stress, Students Becoming Mindful

“It Is Useless to See When the Mind Is Blind”

Students always carry a bag of book and aching emotions to school. Eventually they are at a higher risk of developing stress and anxiety. Prolonged exposure to stress leads to long term physiological and emotional disturbances which severely hinder their learning and development.

For children at school the day begins with a few minutes of mindfulness practice. Mindfulness is a psychological process of bringing one’s attention to experience happening in the present moment. Mmpians focus on things they would otherwise skip they meditate on sounds – like their own heartbeat, sounds in nature and around the classroom while deep breathing. It aims to develop self awareness, attention, and compassion and reduce anxiety. Students are learning self help skills to distress.

Visit to Nai Talim School

It was a different day from a normal routine day when Mrs. Rooma Pathak, Principal visited Nai Talim, Anand Niketan School, Wardha, Nagpur on 30th September 2019 along with 35 principals from Delhi schools.

The visit focused on the mental action of acquiring knowledge and understanding through thought, experience, and the senses as guided by Mahatma Gandhi. The visit also focused on sustainable future and on the experiential environment friendly pedagogy for kids these days.

Introduction to “craft-based” education was given in which practical skill serves as the center and foundation of an individual’s spiritual, cultural, and social development and in which skills such as literacy and mathematics are learned in context with and in service to their craft. In this approach to schooling, academic subjects are taught in an interdisciplinary way and never separated from their practical application in the world. The craft-centered approach instills the dignity of labor, the value of self-sufficiency, and strengthens local culture.

Not surprisingly, a nonviolent approach to socialization is integral to Nai Talim, stressing personal responsibility and inculcating self-discipline rather than reliance on external authority, with the teacher role-modeling the values and qualities that the students are meant to learn to embody themselves.

Anand Niketan is a wonderful place, a must visit place for every educator.
