Topic : Testing of samples of polluted water in different area.
Activity : 1. Washing soda process: In this method polluted water is treated with calculated amount of washing soda (Na₂CO₃). Chlorides and sulphates of calcium and magnesium present in water get precipitated. It shows that there is certain amount of impurities present in water.
Ca Cl₂ + Na₂ Co₃ → Ca Co₃ ↓ + 2Na Cl
Mg SO₄ + Na₂ CO₃ → Mg CO₃ ↓ +Na₂ So₄
Activity: 2.Lime soda process: In this method all type of impurities are tested. In this case calculated amount of slaked lime and sodium carbonate are used. Calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate are precipitated. Slaked lime removes temporary hardness and sodium carbonate removes permanent hardness.
Ca (HCO₃)₂ + Ca (OH)₂ → 2CaCO₃ ↓ +2H₂O
Ca Cl₂ + Na₂ Co₃ → Ca CO₃ ↓ + 2NaCl
Learning Outcome 1. They know about different types impurities present in water bodies and how it is tested.
2. They prepared slides for PowerPoint presentation related to this topic. In this way they got to know about various types pollutants present in water bodies of different localities.
3. They know about temporary and permanent hardness of water.
Conclusion: These activities were conducted successfully. Students enjoyed doing these activities. They learned about different sources of water pollution present in different localities. They also made different slides of PowerPoint presentation related to this topic.
